How To Clean Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are popular choices for the modern home, but only work to full efficiency when they are properly cleaned and maintained.

It is worth knowing the basics of how to clean hot tubs for those who have recently bought one or are thinking of buying a hot tub.  All the elements of a hot tub must be kept clean and in pristine condition for the user to get the most effective use from the spa; this also includes the filters and accessories.

When cleaning the hot tub, make sure to wear gloves to protect your hands from the harsh chemicals and any bacteria.  Chemical treatments and sanitizers need to be applied to the water to maintain safety and kill any bacteria that can build up on hot tub surfaces.  It is crucial to clean the filter at regular intervals so it does not get clogged and reduce the water flow.

Try to ensure that the filter is properly cleaned approximately every two weeks using a specially designed chemical product.  This usually comes in tablet or powder form.  A user should soak the filter in the chemical solution after dissolving it in water and leave overnight.  Brush the hot tub using a special filter brush to get rid of any debris and bacteria.  Leave the filter to thoroughly dry before reinserting it back into the tub.  Do not clean any elements of the hot tub in the dishwasher, as this can affect their quality.  Remember to replace filters approximately every nine months.  All cleaning products can be sourced online.

How to Choose the Right Hot Tub Accessories

There are so many different types of hot tub accessories available that it’s difficult to know where to start. Just like everything else in the home, from mobile phone apps to kitchen gadgets, you need to decide what you want them for and how often you’re likely to use them.

Try investing in a hot tub enclosure.  This will give increased privacy, as well as protection from bad weather conditions.  Hot tub enclosures are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in urban areas, and come in a range of different sizes and shapes.  Similarly, built-in shelves on a hot tub are a great touch of luxury for when guests really need to relax – simply bring a drink into the hot tub and relax.

Skimmers and drains of various types can help maintenance tasks become less of a chore, and budget and personal preference are the main factors in deciding which ones you choose.  There are a range of relatively inexpensive automatic drains and skimmers on the market.

A cover is essential for hot tubs, both for longevity and safety. If a hot tub does not come with covers fitted, one will need to be bought separately.  Purchase one with good insulation and a lock to keep children away when the tub is not in use.  Mylovac wrapped covers prevent water absorption with a water-repellent insulating layer.

Another important accessory is an extra filter in addition to the fitted one.  This means that the filters can be rotated on a weekly basis to prevent algae and bacteria accumulating in the hot tub.

Choosing the Right Size Hot Tub

The type and size of the hot tub that are required are the first things to consider when choosing which model to buy.

These considerations will have a direct bearing on the price, so budget is another factor here.  Hot tubs can hold anything from two people to seven people, depending on the available space and the maximum number of people the tub will be required to hold, and this will to a large extent be dictated by lifestyle.

Smaller hot tubs tend to cost less, but the cost will also depend on additional features such as jets, grab rails and pillows.  Smaller models will obviously hold less people, but if space is an issue they can be a cost-effective solution, ideal for couples.

Larger types of hot tubs work well for larger families and for people who tend to do a lot of entertaining, as these can accommodate more people, so if space is no problem then this will be the preferred option.  Larger tubs will usually also come with more added features, so which model to choose really depends on the expected usage.  Also, take into account the fact that heavier usage will result in frequent maintenance requirements, and the filters will have to be cleaned and rotated more often.

‘Non-lounger’ hot tubs can hold more people but come without the comfortable lay-down seating, whereas the other, ‘lounger’, tubs include this feature but involve sacrificing space.

Caring For Hot Tubs

Even though some of the more modern hot tubs are self-cleaning, many still require the owner to check the quality of the water by hand and add chemicals manually.

Just as swimming pools need to be regularly maintained, so do hot tubs. They need regular attention; otherwise, algae and bacteria will start to accumulate.  In fact, the warm conditions will increase the likelihood of bacteria developing, so it is essential from a hygiene perspective to carry out minor maintenance on a regular basis.

Most maintenance tasks will only take a few minutes, and once a regular routine is established there should be no problems.  However, younger children should be kept away during the cleaning process as potentially harmful chemicals are involved.

On a daily basis, it is advisable to test the pH level and raise or lower it as necessary, as well as using an anti-foam spray as and when required. If the pH level has dropped significantly, chlorine can be added to redress the balance.

The water filter will need to be cleaned every week using a filter cleaner, and it should ideally be exchanged on a weekly basis too.

Check the hardness of the water, or its calcium content, each month.  If the calcium content is high, limescale remover can be added.  This is especially important if the hot tub is located in a hard water area, because calcium deposits can quickly build up and cause the pump or heater to fail.

By following a regular maintenance routine, every hot tub should continue to provide clean, crystal-clear water for many years to come.

What Are The Main Types of Hot Tubs?

Over the years there have been a huge number of developments and improvements in hot tubs. So many that it’s easy to become a bit overwhelmed when you first start shopping around for one.

So rather than focusing initially on all the feature options that you may want, why not first take a step back, and focus on some of the main differences?

For example, you have the choice of a stationary unit that’s pretty much permanently installed at your home or new portable hot tubs designed to be packed up and taken with you.

Even then there are two main differences in portable spas with one style being an inflatable type, and another style being made of high tech, high-impact plastics.

So why are there two distinct types of portable hot tubs to choose from? The reason for these centres around trade-offs. With inflatable hot tub you won’t have the amount of features available that you will have with a high impact plastic tub.

But the trade-off here is that an inflatable model is far more portable because while the plastic models require a truck to be moved, inflatable hot tub can be folded up and fit in the boot of a car.

Then size is another difference you have to take into account. Now your first inclination may be to go with the largest home tub possible but there’s a trade-off here too if you opt for a smaller model, and that is price. You’re going to pay a lot less for a hot tub that holds four people, versus one that will holds eight, and you may be surprised at how low prices have gone in recent years.

Then one more notable difference revolves around manufacturing techniques, and this is really an interesting topic. For instance, one piece molded plastic hot tubs that are made by rotational molding have been generating a huge buzz in recent years.

They’re manufactured in much the same way a giant water tank is, so there far more durable. Also you may be surprised at how well these new “rotational molded” plastic tubs capture the look and feel of natural materials like wood, and stone.

Then another major consideration that you may want to take into account is the materials your hot tub will be made from, and natural wood has always been a popular choice. A solid redwood hot tub looks absolutely amazing, so it’s easy to gravitate towards them.

However before you make your final decision you need to be aware that natural wood brings a number of maintenance issues, and if it isn’t properly cared for the wood will quickly lose its look. On the other hand, synthetic materials are all low maintenance.

Buying Hot Tubs Without Warranty – Don’t Do It!

We have said this many times before, but we will say it again – Do not buy a cheap hot tub that is not covered under warranty! And we are not talking about tubs which are covered under the normal 1 year warranty, we are talking about making sure your supplier is also willing to come out to you on site and repair any problems. They must offer a parts and labour warranty. Read more here…
